Grant making

In the year we provided 21 grants in the total value of £224,654. There were three main criteria for grants applications and awards:

A number of the grants awarded were particularly valuable in helping agencies respond to increasing pressures in their operating environment and the management of change in response. We see this as a need that will continue to be an important aspect of our funding programme.

Andy Ludlow Awards

During 2004 we also continued our support of the Andy Ludlow Awards scheme. This scheme celebrates innovation and good practice in tackling homelessness in London. It is led by the ALG (now London Councils) and co-sponsored by the Homelessness and Housing Support Directorate of the ODPM.

In July broadcaster Jon Snow and Housing Minister Keith Hill presented the awards in a ceremony in the House of Commons, along with cheques for prize money: £10,000 for the winning project and three prizes of £5,000 for highly commended runners-up. Overall winner was St Giles Trust for their peer advice project in prisons. Runners-up were: Streets Alive Youth Theatre Company; St Mungos and Thames Reach. Find out more about the 2004 awards.

Reviewing our grant-making

In July 2004, we began a fundamental review of our grant-making operation, with an evening seminar with heads of ten leading homelessness agencies, hosted by The Connection at St Martins. The Directors subsequently agreed that organisational strengthening should remain a main area for grant-making in 2005/06 and beyond. Investigations are continuing on whether also to focus project related funding more tightly, with particular interest in the stimulation of the private rented sector as a better supply of accommodation for homeless individuals.
