Description of Services
The Foyer Federation was established in 1992 to stimulate and promote the development of the Foyer concept in the UK. The Federation offers a range of services to operational and developing Foyers, raises awareness of Foyers' work, and represents the movement at all levels of decision-making throughout the UK.
Foyers provide accommodation with opportunity for young people, and a community in which they can grow and thrive. By integrating training and job search, personal support and motivation with a place to live, they provide a bridge to independence, and a chance for young people to realise their full potential.
The Foyer Federation has approximately 160 members and offers many essential services for its membership, these include: running monthly training sessions (including a distance learning programme, in partnership with the DTLR And Dulverton Trust); co-ordinating and managing quarterly regional network meetings, bringing together members and encouraging sharing of best practice and ideas; the production of invaluable publications for its members. The Foyer Federation were key in the development of UK Online, online centres are at the forefront of the government's drive to bring internet access within the reach of all citizens. The aim is to establish 6000 centres across the UK, each providing cheap or free internet access, and help with getting started online. As part of this programme, the government has invested in the establishment of UK online centres in 50 Foyers in England and many of these are surpassing their 3-year targets and proving to be a massive success.
Purpose of Grant
To assist the work being done by Foyers in conjunction with The Learning Skills Council, to develop life skills programmes in non-foyer settings. The grant enabled The Foyer Federation to engage consultants to identify four young people's housing projects to pilot the training.
