Refugee Council

Description of Services
The Refugee Council is the largest organisation in the UK working with asylum seekers and refugees. We not only give help and support, but also work with asylum seekers and refugees to ensure their needs and concerns are addressed.  Some of the services offered include:  giving advice and support to asylum seekers and refugees to help them rebuild their lives;  working with refugee community organisations;  caring for unaccompanied refugee children;  offering training and employment courses to enable asylum seekers and refugees to use their skills and qualifications;  managing a residential home for young refugees;  campaigning and lobbying for refugees' voices to be heard in the UK and abroad; and producing information on refugee issues worldwide, including reports, statistics and analysis.

Purpose of Grant
To provide a grant towards the costs of establishing and running emergency day centre services in Croydon in response to additional needs arising from reduced Government support for asylum seekers under the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002.    The day centre aims to provide food, clothing, referral to hostel accommodation, access to legal services, assessment of health needs and advice and information.  The centre will be open 5 days a week and expects to see 100 people each day.
