Description of Services
Deptford Centre - previously Deptford Churches Crypt Club - is a charity working with people in South East London to address social, education, emotional and spiritual needs. Over 100 people, aged between 16 and 90 attend the club every day, which is also open to families on Thursdays. The Crypt Club provides practical help, support and meals for people at the margins of society through homelessness, mental health, loneliness and severe poverty.
Orchestra of St John's (OSJ) was founded in 1967, since then it has built its reputation on world-class concerts at the finest festivals and concert halls in the UK and overseas, combined with intimate music making in community settings. It commissions new music, produces recordings and is broadcast on radio and television, further ensuring its international profile and accessibility. Alongside its public performances, OSJ works to develop the therapeutic, educational and social benefits of music. Activities include: creative music making workshops in mainstream and special needs school and community centres; cross-arts projects; teacher-training; pre-concert talks; informal recitals in residential homes, hospices and hospitals; orchestral coaching; master-classes; composition workshops; concerts for children and for those with specific disabilities; and, major community events.
Purpose of Grant
To assist in the funding of "Music Lifts", a project making interactive music workshops available to those who attend Deptford Centre. The primary aim of Music Lifts is to enhance the quality of life of those at the margins of society and to help them develop confidence and transferable life skills. Working in conjunction with staff and volunteers at the Club, the project will encourage participants to develop creativity, to interact socially with one another, the staff and the musicians, to express their feelings through music and to benefit from a stimulating and invigorating environment.
