Refugee Council
Description of organisation
The Refugee Council is the largest charity in the UK that gives practical help to refugees and asylum seekers and promotes their rights in the UK and abroad. Our objective is to ensure that refugees' rights are respected and that they have access to safety, dignity, the means to live and the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Purpose of grant
In 2000, the London Housing Foundation granted £50,000 over two years, to support the training of refugee community organisations in London.
Outcomes/results of activities funded with grant
- Since the start of the grant (November 2000), 349 participants from 103 refugee community organisations took part in local training on a range of subjects from fundraising to how to set up a management committee.
- During this same period, 169 participants attended 50 customised in-house training sessions.
- A study for a pilot impact assessment was completed in early 2002 that measured the impact on training for a sample of 100 refugee community organisations. From the study, it was found that 80% of RCOs said that their services had improved after taking part in training.
- Participants scored the 2001 local training programme higher than any previous training programme.
- RCOs have a say in what kind of training they want - every year a needs assessment is carried out to determine what courses to offer and in what areas of London. This keeps our training courses relevant to the needs of RCOs.
- The majority of participants continue to be refugees and asylum seekers and about 50% of participants are women.
