The Who Cares? Trust exists to improve the day-to-day lives of the 60,000 children and young people in public care in the UK: through promoting and acting on their views and experiences; through encouraging access to opportunities for children and young people; and through eliminating the discrimination they experience as a result of being in care. Children and young people enter public care for a variety of reasons. 96% of children come into care through family breakdown rather than through any action of their own. Children and young people in public care are recognised as being at great disadvantage and socially excluded. Outcomes for this population are extremely poor and are not related to potential. We work in partnership nationally with central government, local government, voluntary organisations and other agencies concerned with best practice in childcare. We aim to influence policy, ensure that children's interests are central to the planning and provision of services to help them and to maintain our trusted link with children and young people themselves. Building on its original core work with children - Who Cares? magazine, the only national quarterly for children in care, read by over 30,000 in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and the Who Cares? Linkline providing confidential support and information by telephone and correspondence - the Trust runs a number of Development Programmes in Health, Education and Preparation for Independence and Employment to influence change in care through innovative pilot projects and materials which we disseminate nationally, all designed with the help of children and young people who are in or who have left care.
