Funding to assist mergers
Through its grants programme, the Foundation has assisted a number of organisations to explore the possibility and face the reality of merger. Most often this has been to help smaller agencies facing a real threat to their viability who need to find shelter within a larger and stronger organisation. Beyond the emotional attachment to the organisation they have helped sustain, the process of merger raises real concerns. What does it involve? What are the senior managers' responsibilities? What is 'due diligence'? How do they proceed?
However, merger is not the solution in all cases: indeed there were concerns that agencies may have been under pressure to move towards merger before other organisational or collaborative options had been fully explored.
