First survey of homelessness service provision in London

14th January 20009

'The Atlas of Services for Homeless People in London', a survey of voluntary sector provision, is now available. Written by Daniel Currie and Rachel Irwin, the Atlas supplies a vital new resource to support London’s homeless sector. It also covers key health providers and non-homeless agencies that work with a large number of homeless.

Despite shrinkage in the number of agencies over the last ten years the report found a substantial range of well-distributed services. Data was gathered both from primary and secondary sources and the main services of 205 agencies are covered: day centres; outreach; direct-access accommodation; second-stage accommodation; floating support; advice; employment, training and education; offenders; and drugs and alcohol.

The Atlas is the first work of its kind and is intended as a starting point for debate about the information that is needed. We are compiling feedback and requests for changes and will produce a revised version in the near future.

The report also gives tantalising hints of directions for future research.
